Product and application brief
Self-tapping enquiries need the selected thread and point together with the mating material and hole preparation. Some designs form the mating thread and others cut it; identify the actual product reference instead of assuming a universal installation method.
Thread and point identity
State the required thread construction, point form and product standard or drawing. A sharp point is not the same feature as a fluted drill point. Self-drilling screws are available through the separate self-drilling product family.
Mating material and hole preparation
Provide material, thickness and the approved hole dimensions or installation specification. Do not assume a self-tapping screw eliminates drilling, works in every substrate or has a universal pilot-hole size.
Head, drive and surface requirements
Choose the head and drive that fit the connection. Identify any sealing washer, coating or exposure requirement as part of the enquiry. Performance and compatibility are reviewed against the selected assembly, not inferred from a generic product image.
Specification checklist for quotation
Provide the required specification and quantity with units. These inputs are not a guaranteed stock range or a product approval.
| Requirement | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Product identity | Exact thread-forming or thread-cutting reference, standard/edition or drawing |
| Head / drive | Head geometry, drive, washer and bearing requirements |
| Size / point | Diameter, length convention, thread and point construction |
| Mating material | Material, thickness, hole preparation and approved installation reference |
| Material / surface | Screw material, properties, finish and required exposure criteria |
| Order | Quantity with units per size, documents, packing and destination |
Common purchasing questions
Are self-tapping and self-drilling the same enquiry?
Not necessarily. A self-drilling design has a specified drill point. Identify the selected screw and hole-preparation requirements; do not treat a pointed self-tapping screw as a drill-point substitute.
Can you assign a pilot-hole size from nominal diameter alone?
The approved hole depends on the selected screw, mating material and assembly. Provide the product reference and installation specification; no universal size is stated here.
Prepare your order brief
Attach the complete product reference or a controlled drawing with revision. List quantities and units for each size, material and finish; include the destination, packing and document requirements. Mark missing or unresolved items for review. Supply scope and any exceptions are confirmed for the actual quotation.
