Thread Specification Checklist

Prepare an unambiguous thread description before requesting bolts, studs, rods or matching nuts.

What to send for quotation

Send the complete thread callout from the approved drawing, not just a diameter. If a thread detail is unresolved, mark it for confirmation so the quotation can separate a known requirement from an assumption.

Keep one thread system per order line

Identify the actual metric or inch thread reference on the drawing. Preserve the specified units and callout. Do not round an inch diameter into a metric designation or combine components because their sizes appear close.

Separate pitch from threaded length

Record diameter and pitch or threads per inch, then specify how far the thread extends. Identify a full-thread or partial-thread product by its governing drawing or standard. On a double-ended stud or rod, describe each end independently.

Name the required fit and mating part

Include the thread tolerance or fit class where specified. Identify the matching nut or tapped component and any special fit requirement. Send a drawing if the mating part is not a standard nut. A nominal diameter is not enough to confirm the fit.

Preserve direction and special geometry

Flag a left-hand thread, different threads at opposite ends, a shoulder, an unthreaded section or a drawing-defined end detail. Do not assume every end is identical. For tensioning hardware, include the complete end arrangement rather than a body-only size.

Review the finished condition

State the coating and whether fit is to be checked in the finished condition. Ask for confirmation of the inspection method and acceptance criteria where relevant. Do not prescribe an unapproved reworking method simply to make a coated assembly fit.

Example enquiry brief

Replace each bracketed field with your approved requirements. Flag any unresolved item for review.

Drawing / revision: [reference]; product: [bolt / stud / rod / nut]; thread: [complete callout]; tolerance: [required class]; thread length and direction: [each end]; mating part: [reference]; finish: [requirement]; quantity: [by size]; unresolved details: [items needing confirmation].
