Screw-In Threaded Inserts for Wood

Select screw-in wood inserts by internal machine thread, external wood-engaging profile, drive, host material and controlled receiving-hole drawing.

Product and application brief

A screw-in wood insert is a sleeve with an internal machine thread and a separate external profile that engages the selected wood or wood-based host. It provides a mating thread for a bolt or machine screw. It is not a pronged tee nut, a wood screw, a plastic heat-set insert or a metal repair insert. Identify the exact construction and host before requesting a quotation.

Construction choices

Choice or fieldWhat to identify
Slotted driveIdentify slot and body geometry from the selected drawing. DIN 7965:2025-09 concerns screwed inserts with slotted drive and chip space; its public overview excludes metallic hosts.
Internal hex driveRAMPA SK and SKD families identify hex-drive wood insert constructions. A hex drive does not make the product equivalent to the slotted DIN construction.
Collar or uncollared bodyA collar changes the seating and receiving interface. Identify collar geometry, installed depth and bearing clearance independently.
Through or blind internal threadIdentify usable engagement, bottom clearance and whether the internal thread is through or blind. RAMPA SKL is a distinct blind-thread example; no approval transfers to another part.

Separate the two thread interfaces

Record the mating machine thread system, diameter, pitch and fit separately from the outside wood-engaging profile. The inside nominal diameter is not a receiving-hole dimension. Body length, external profile, drive and tolerances follow the controlled insert drawing.

Specify the actual wood or board

Identify wood species or board type, density or grade where relevant, moisture condition, grain orientation, thickness, edge distances and receiving-hole preparation. Similar outside appearance does not establish suitability for every timber, plywood, particleboard or composite.

Installation requires the selected reference

Provide the approved receiving-hole and installation instructions, drive access, installed-depth datum and inspection method. This selector gives no universal drill size, torque, pull-out value, cycle-life claim or tool compatibility.

Standard identity is not a supply certificate

DIN Media lists DIN 7965:2025-09 as current, replacing the 1965 edition. Its public scope concerns slotted inserts with chip space for wood, plastics or similar hosts and not metallic materials. No normative dimensions are reproduced here, and not every maker-specific wood insert is declared compliant or interchangeable.

Distinguish adjacent furniture connections

Pronged tee nuts locate through a host hole and use prongs; cross-dowel nuts use a transverse receiving arrangement. Screw-in wood inserts use their own external engagement profile. Select the host interface first rather than reusing a furniture fastener by thread size alone.

Define quotation and acceptance

State part reference or controlled drawing revision, material and finish requirements, mating component, quantities, packing, destination and required inspection documents. Stock, production timing, certificates and application suitability remain order-specific confirmation items.

Common product questions

Is this the same product as a pronged tee nut?

No. The wood-engaging external profile and installation interface differ from a pronged nut.

Does DIN 7965 identify every hex-drive wood insert?

No. Its published scope concerns slotted-drive inserts with chip space. A maker-specific hex-drive construction needs its own reference.

Can the machine-thread size be used as the pilot-hole size?

No. The host interface must follow the selected insert and controlled receiving-hole drawing.
