Product and application brief
A solid-body insert provides an internal screw thread within a continuous sleeve body. Its outside connects to the host component through a separately specified fixing interface. This is not a wire-coil insert, loose spacer, coupling nut or sheet-metal rivet nut. Start with the selected construction and host drawing; a similar inside thread does not establish a replacement part.
Product forms and reference names
| Choice or field | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Self-tapping, cutting slot | KerbKonus Ensat-S Works Standard 302 identifies a slotted construction; SI and headed variants have separate references. A maker works standard is not a general DIN or ISO product standard. |
| Self-tapping, cutting bores | Ensat-SB Works Standards 307/308 identify separate short/long constructions with three cutting bores. Other bore, chip-reservoir and closed-bottom variants need their own exact code. |
| Key-locking solid insert | Howmet Keysert/KEENSERTS examples use a threaded body and separate locking keys. Wall series and internal locking options are distinct choices; keys securing the body do not by themselves define screw-locking behaviour. |
| Formed locking-flange insert | Böllhoff KOBSERT uses a locking flange and a neck region deformed during setting. Its through, closed and sealing-ring examples are separate constructions, not generic key-locking sleeves. |
| Controlled drawing or series | Specify the exact maker reference and revision or controlled drawing. DIN8140-1:2022-04 identifies wire inserts for ISO metric threads; it is not a universal solid-body insert specification. |
Separate the inside thread from the outside fixing
Record the mating screw thread system, diameter, pitch and fit independently from the external thread or other host interface. Do not use the inside nominal size as the receiving-hole diameter. Outside form, wall thickness, body length and any flange, key or closed end must come from the selected drawing. Similar visible proportions do not establish interchangeable geometry.
Choose the installation mechanism first
A cutting insert, keyed insert and deformable locking flange require different preparation and tooling. Identify the permitted host material and condition, receiving hole or thread, access, installation depth datum and inspection reference. Request the selected supplier's controlled installation instructions; no universal drill, tap, setting force, torque or tool compatibility is supplied here.
Distinguish body retention, screw locking and sealing
The mechanism retaining the insert in its host is separate from any feature controlling the mating screw. A sealed or closed version is another choice, not a property of every solid sleeve. Identify the exact seal arrangement, medium and acceptance requirement when applicable. Appearance, a cutting slot or a trade name does not establish locking torque, leakage performance or an approval.
Specify the host and repair boundaries
For a new component, provide its alloy, material condition, available section and controlled receiving interface. For a repair, provide the damaged-hole condition, remaining wall, required final thread location and the approved repair specification. This identification page does not approve a repair, guarantee original strength restoration or establish load, temperature or repeated-use capability.
Specification fields
| Choice or field | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Identity and variant | Selected fixing mechanism, series/code or drawing/revision; wall series; headed/headless and through/closed form; internal locking or seal options explicitly identified. |
| Mating thread | Internal thread system, nominal size, pitch and required fit; mating screw specification and usable engagement. |
| External and host interface | Outside thread/profile, receiving hole/thread reference and tolerances from selected drawing; host material, condition and repair status. |
| Geometry and access | Body length and datum, flange or key geometry, available depth, edge/wall clearances and tool access; supplied dimensions kept separate from installed condition. |
| Installation and inspection | Exact installation-tool reference, receiving preparation and approved sequence, installed acceptance, gauges and required qualification/test documents. |
| Material and finish | Insert material/condition/coating separate from the host; application exposure, corrosion or seal requirements separately stated. |
| Order scope | Quantity by variant, specified components/tooling if included, packing, drawing revision and requested documents; stock, MOQ and delivery require confirmation. |
Common product questions
Can a solid sleeve use a wire-insert receiving thread?
Do not assume compatibility. Select the receiving interface and tools for the exact solid insert; wire-coil and solid-body constructions are different.
Does key locking also lock the mating screw?
Body retention and screw locking are separate requirements. State any required internal locking version and its controlled acceptance criteria explicitly.
Are works-standard numbers DIN equivalents?
No equivalence is established here. Record whether the reference is a maker works standard, formal product standard or controlled drawing and obtain the selected specification.
