Product and application brief
A rivet nut is a sleeve-like threaded insert for a mating screw. It is not the same construction as an unthreaded blind rivet or a loose hex nut. Specify the complete insert and panel drawing, not just a thread size; a matching thread does not identify the body, head or grip range.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Round body — smooth or knurled | Böllhoff’s original range distinguishes smooth and knurled round shanks. Identify the actual outside profile and the matching hole requirement. Surface texture alone does not establish an anti-rotation rating. |
| Hexagonal or partial-hex body | Full and partial hexagonal shanks are distinct geometry options. State the hex portion and mating hole drawing; do not substitute a round-hole insert solely because the thread is the same. |
| Head and end options | Flat, countersunk or small-head choices and open/closed ends are separate identifiers. A closed end alone is not a waterproof or leak-test guarantee. Specify the head seat and screw clearance. |
| Maker reference versus generic construction | RIVKLE, Eurosert and Hexsert are maker family names, not global interchangeable standard numbers. STANLEY identifies Hexsert as a hexagonal-body threaded insert. These references explain terminology, not our brand affiliation or branded stock. |
A threaded insert, not an ordinary rivet
The insert carries an internal screw thread. Ordinary pull-mandrel blind rivets have a different body and setting arrangement. A blind rivet stud has an external mating feature rather than the female thread described here. Other weld, self-clinching and solid threaded inserts require their own identification.
Thread and body need separate fields
Record the thread system, nominal size, pitch and specified tolerance class. Also provide the body profile, head diameter and height, blank length and end condition. A thread label cannot determine panel hole dimensions or replace the product drawing.
Grip range is not blank length
Grip range describes the panel thickness covered by a selected insert variant, not its uninstalled overall length. Give the actual panel or stack thickness, material and hole drawing. Use the exact selected part’s range rather than applying one grip value to every insert with the same thread.
Setting and mating screw requirements
A deformable portion of the sleeve forms the blind-side retaining feature during setting. Define the selected insert, tool compatibility and finished setting acceptance before assembly. Include usable thread engagement and screw clearance for the chosen end style; this overview supplies no universal setting stroke, force or installation torque.
Reference documents and custom requirements
Supply a controlled part drawing or exact manufacturer code with any specified standard and edition. Formal standard-to-model mapping and dimensional tables have not been established here. Custom head, body or thread variants need a drawing; material, finish and inspection documents are independent requirements, not inferred from an illustrative surface colour.
Specification fields
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Exact insert reference | Maker code or controlled drawing/revision; applicable standard and edition if specified. |
| Female thread | System, nominal size, pitch, tolerance class and usable engagement requirement. |
| Body geometry | Round/smooth/knurled/full-hex/partial-hex profile, diameter or across-flats and relevant tolerances. |
| Head and end | Flange/head dimensions and seat; open or closed end, screw clearance. |
| Panel and grip | Actual thickness/stack, material and finished hole drawing; exact selected grip range. |
| Material and finish | Exact alloy/designation and condition, coating and specified inspection evidence. |
| Assembly and order | Setting acceptance/tool compatibility, quantity with units, revision and packing; no generic load or torque assumed. |
Common product questions
Does the same thread size make two rivet nuts interchangeable?
No. Compare body shape, head, end style, grip range and hole requirements as well as the thread and material.
Does a closed-end rivet nut guarantee a sealed joint?
No sealing qualification is established by this overview. Specify the required joint sealing design and test separately.
Is grip range the same as rivet nut length?
No. Grip range refers to covered panel thickness for the selected part; blank length is a separate dimension.
