Product and assembly brief
This selector covers the semi-tubular self-piercing rivet route, not every technology called self-piercing. The selected rivet pierces the upper material layers and forms an interlock in the lower layer during die-supported setting. Part identity and joint qualification must be resolved together before quotation.
Product forms and reference names
| Choice or field | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Semi-tubular self-piercing rivet | Identify the head, shank and blind cavity from the selected blank section. This is not a separate-pull-mandrel blind rivet. |
| Application-specific rivet variant | Different head/shank geometry, hardness and finish require their own controlled reference; similar appearance is not interchangeability. |
| Loose or collated presentation | State the selected feed-system requirements separately from the part geometry. No universal tape, feeder or tool fit is promised. |
Piercing and forming, not ordinary cavity selection
Böllhoff's original RIVSET description identifies a semi-tubular rivet that pierces the upper material and forms an undercut in the lower layer. Henrob's introductory process shows the tail flaring with die support, without a pre-drilled hole. These are selected-system descriptions, not permission to replace an ordinary semi-tubular rivet in a drilled joint or a break-pull blind rivet. The AI figure depicts only a generic blank cutaway, not the finished interlock.
Rivet and joint are separate specifications
Specify the blank head, shank, length datum and cavity on the part drawing. Record actual layer materials, individual thicknesses and stacking order on the joint drawing. Do not call rivet blank length a blind-rivet grip range. Include accessible setting and die sides and clearance restrictions; a name alone cannot establish access suitability.
Matched die, setting system and feeding
Atlas Copco describes its Henrob solution as rivets, setters and custom dies working as a system. Give the selected die and tool references, feeding presentation and approved process-review requirements. No generic setting force, stroke, cycle time, tape pitch or tool compatibility is stated. Proprietary RIVSET and Henrob names are source identities, not FastenerBridge brand affiliation or interchangeable product codes.
Joint acceptance is not proved by appearance
Henrob's joint-development material distinguishes visual and section analysis from strength and repeatability testing. Specify the inspection plan, finished-head condition, lower-layer interlock and retained-material requirements for your approved assembly. A neat head or button is not independent proof of strength, sealing or corrosion performance. This page supplies no universal acceptance threshold or test qualification; the selected joint needs its own engineering evidence.
Reference and standard boundaries
DIN Media identifies DIN 6791:2012-05 as semi-tubular pan-head rivets. A partial cavity does not by itself establish an SPR rivet's conformity to that standard. Use the selected controlled drawing, revision and any applicable specification supplied for the actual part. No universal product-dimensional SPR standard or equivalence is assigned here.
Material and purchasing boundary
State the required rivet material, condition, hardness and coating, plus joined materials and service conditions. Requirements are enquiry inputs, not confirmed manufacturing capabilities or an approved material combination. Supply, inspection documents, quantities and timing are confirmed in the final quotation; third-party performance and application approvals do not transfer to an unspecified part.

| Choice or field | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Controlled part identity | Selected reference/drawing and revision; applicable specification if required, without assumed brand equivalence. |
| Blank section | Head and bearing form; shank diameter, length and datum; cavity profile, wall and tail edge; drawing-defined tolerances. |
| Material and condition | Required material designation, heat-treatment/condition, hardness and finish; evidence requirements stated separately. |
| Ordered material stack | Layer-by-layer material and thickness, orientation/order, surface condition and any adhesive requirement; joint drawing revision. |
| Setting interface | Selected die/tool/feed-system references, access and clearances, approved process or required compatibility review. |
| Finished-joint acceptance | Specified head/interlock/lower-layer criteria, inspection or section review, application qualification and test requirements. |
| Order package | Quantity with units, documents/traceability, packaging, destination and unresolved decisions. |
Common product questions
Is every semi-tubular rivet suitable for self-piercing?
No. A partial cavity is a geometric feature, not approval for a piercing process. Select the actual rivet, die, layer stack and validated setting system.
Does self-piercing mean a blind-rivet tool can set it?
No. This selected semi-tubular route uses die-supported setting, not a mandrel-pulling mechanism. Access and tool suitability require specific confirmation.
Can I choose a rivet by total stack thickness alone?
No. Provide individual layer materials, thicknesses and order, controlled rivet section, selected die/system and finished-joint requirements. No universal grip or length table is provided.
