Drive Rivets

Pin-driven rivets with an expanding tail: identify the head, body and drive pin, selected grip and hole requirements, joined stack and controlled product drawing.

Product and assembly brief

This page covers metal drive-pin rivets whose short projecting pin is driven inward to expand the tail prongs. It does not cover every fastener installed with a hammer. Existing break-pull blind rivets use a different setting mechanism. Select a controlled reference and joint drawing before requesting a quotation.

Product forms and reference names

Choice or fieldWhat to identify
Pin-driven expanding-prong constructionA headed body and short separate drive pin; the pin is driven inward rather than pulled and broken off.
Head and seating formSpecify the selected protruding or countersunk head and mating seat from its drawing, not a universal head angle.
Joint-specific catalogue or drawing variantDefine the exact part and joint requirements. A source-specific liner or masonry version does not qualify another generic rivet for the same service.

Drive pin versus a break-pull mandrel

In the maker's drive-rivet construction, inward pin movement expands the body prongs. A break-pull rivet uses a projecting stem pulled by a setting system. These mechanisms must not share an assumed grip table or installation tool. The appearance illustration shows an uninstalled generic part, not an installation procedure.

Reference identity and standard boundaries

Southco's 10/38 catalogue is a manufacturer product family, not an ISO or DIN standard. ISO 15977:2002 identifies open-end blind rivets with a break-pull mandrel and a specified material pairing; it is not assigned to these drive-pin rivets. Use the exact selected drawing, product reference and applicable specification. No universal standard equivalence, maker affiliation or conformity is claimed.

Head, hole and joined stack

Provide the head and seat geometry, body diameter, uninstalled length datum, actual joined thickness, finished hole and available tail clearance. Keep the selected product's grip interval separate from its overall length. Hole values and acceptance conditions must come from the selected design; this page supplies no generic drilling or installation recipe.

Body, pin and application requirements

Identify body and pin material and finish independently. Describe the joined materials, access and environmental requirements in the enquiry. Pin-driven construction alone does not establish structural capacity, sealing, vibration resistance, tamper resistance or masonry suitability. Product-specific qualifications and tests cannot be transferred from another maker's catalogue.

Installation and purchasing boundary

Submit the approved process or required tooling review and finished-joint acceptance criteria with the part drawing. No universal hammer, pneumatic tool, setting force, strike count or removal method is approved here. Supply range, quantity, timing and documents are confirmed for the final quotation.

Common product questions

Is a drive rivet the same as a break-pull blind rivet?

No. This drive-pin form expands its tail by inward pin movement; the existing break-pull form is set by pulling a mandrel. Identify the actual mechanism, not just the word blind.

Does any hammer-driven fastener belong here?

No. Solid-rivet forming, helical drive screws and substrate anchors are separate constructions. A name or similar head does not establish interchangeability.

Can catalogue dimensions or approvals be copied to a generic drive rivet?

No. Keep the selected part, joint and controlled requirements together. Manufacturer dimensions, tool instructions and application qualifications are specific to the referenced product.
