Product and application brief
A break-pull blind rivet has a sleeve and a separate mandrel. The projecting mandrel is used by the setting tool; it is not a screw thread. Open-end and closed-end bodies, protruding and countersunk heads, and different body/mandrel metal combinations are distinct selections. Use the full product reference rather than a diameter-only description.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Open-end, protruding head — ISO 15977:2002 | Official ISO identity for an aluminium-alloy body with a steel break-pull mandrel and protruding head. This reference does not cover every blind-rivet material combination or verify our conformity. |
| Open-end, countersunk head — ISO 15978:2002 | A separate aluminium-alloy-body/steel-mandrel reference. A countersunk seat is a different geometry from a protruding head; the name alone does not define the mating countersink. |
| Closed-end, protruding head — ISO 15973:2000 | Separate closed-body aluminium-alloy/steel-mandrel identification. A closed sleeve is not an unconditional watertight, pressure or structural approval. |
| Maker-defined large-flange or other material combinations | STANLEY lists an open-end stainless-body/stainless-mandrel large-flange model separately. Identify the exact maker code and drawing; an aluminium/steel ISO reference is not automatically applicable. |
Body, head and mandrel are separate choices
Specify whether the sleeve is open or closed, the bearing head profile and size, and the sleeve and mandrel metals independently. A large flange, countersunk head or retained-mandrel construction changes the required product definition. Colour and a generic photograph cannot establish alloy, coating or stem retention.
Grip range is not body length
The joined stack thickness must fit the selected product’s published grip range. Sleeve length and nominal diameter alone are insufficient. Keep total stack thickness, permitted grip interval, hole requirements and blind-side clearance separate; obtain them from the exact product drawing or data sheet rather than substituting one universal table.
Ordinary break-pull rivets are not all structural blind fasteners
The cited STANLEY open-end example is classified as non-structural. Multi-grip, locking-stem and other specialist blind fasteners require their own product identity and evidence. Do not transfer a maker’s strength, retention, sealing or approval claims to an unverified generic rivet. Solid rivets, tubular rivets and threaded rivet nuts are different constructions.
Standards and drawing-based variants
The three ISO references distinguish body closure, head and aluminium-alloy/steel material pairing. Other metals and geometries need the applicable reference or a controlled drawing. Custom head, sleeve length or material selections should specify drawing revision, units, inspection and installation-system requirements; they do not create a new universal standard model.
Specification fields
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Product identity | Exact standard and edition or maker/product code; open/closed body and ordinary/specialist construction. |
| Head | Protruding, countersunk or large flange, with the selected profile and bearing dimensions. |
| Body and mandrel | Sleeve alloy and mandrel material separately, plus applicable mechanical and finish requirements. |
| Diameter and body length | Nominal sleeve diameter and body length with the selected drawing’s tolerances. |
| Grip and joined stack | Product grip range and actual total joined thickness; do not replace grip with sleeve length. |
| Hole and access | Specified hole dimensions, blind-side clearance and compatible setting-tool/nosepiece reference. |
| Order definition | Quantity with units, drawing/specification attachments, required inspection documents and packing. |
Common product questions
Is a blind rivet the same as a rivet nut?
No. This page covers pull-mandrel rivets with a sleeve; a rivet nut provides an internal thread and requires a separate product specification.
Can I select a rivet only by diameter and length?
No. Identify the body/head form, sleeve and mandrel materials and required grip range. Hole and installation-system details follow the selected product data, not just its nominal diameter.
Does a closed-end rivet guarantee a sealed or structural joint?
No such guarantee is made here. Closure describes the sleeve form; application-specific sealing, retention, strength and approval require evidence for the exact product and joint.
