Product and application brief
A constant-section retaining ring has a uniform section around its open circumference. Identify the ring profile and shaft or housing use before selecting a reference. Here snap ring means the constant-section family, not every part called a circlip. The illustration shows one generic flat-section, plain-ended open ring only; it is not a spiral, lugged circlip or actual supplied part.
Product forms and reference names
| Choice or field | What to identify |
|---|---|
| External / shaft construction | Seats in a groove on the outside of a shaft. Specify the shaft, groove and free-state ring requirements together; do not substitute an internal ring by nominal size. |
| Internal / housing construction | Seats in a groove inside a bore or housing. Keep bore, groove and free-state ring dimensions separately identified. |
| Flat-wire versus round-wire section | Rotor Clip separately identifies CFS/CFH flat-wire shaft/housing examples and CRS/CRH round-wire examples. A rectangular section and a circular wire section require different drawings; these maker codes are not FastenerBridge stock codes. |
| End configuration | Plain, angled, asymmetric or notched ends are drawing-specific. Absence of plier lugs does not establish a universal installation tool or procedure. |
| Reference boundary | ASME B27.6 names uniform-cross-section spiral retaining rings. Uniform section alone does not place this generic open snap-ring family under that spiral standard. Specify the selected standard/edition only where the exact construction is established. |
Uniform radial width is not a spiral identity
Rotor Clip distinguishes constant radial-wall snap rings from tapered-section circlips, whose wall narrows toward the ends. It separately groups spiral constructions. Compare the complete end, section and turn arrangement rather than relying on the words snap ring or uniform section.
Section and end detail before substitution
The maker overview lists separate round-wire and flat-wire families and different cut-off styles. Record section diameter for a round wire, or radial width and axial thickness for a flat section; identify the end gap and end/removal features on the controlled drawing. Do not infer dimensions or interchangeability from the illustration.
Ring and groove form one purchasing package
Identify shaft or bore use, units, free versus installed dimensions, groove diameter and width, edge geometry and surrounding clearance. These are separate order inputs, not universal design values. The mating component and approved assembly requirements decide suitability.
Do not transfer performance or installation claims
A manufacturer may describe groove contact or special installation features for its products; this page does not establish thrust capacity, rotational speed, impact resistance, temperature, repeated use or tool compatibility. Ask for product-specific qualification and the required inspection criteria before accepting an alternative.
Specification fields
| Choice or field | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Product identity | Internal/housing or external/shaft; exact maker series and part reference, selected standard and edition if applicable, or drawing/revision. |
| Section | Round-wire diameter or flat-section radial width and axial thickness; tolerances and measurement basis. |
| Ring geometry | Free-state ring diameter and end gap separately from installed envelope; exact end/removal profile and edge details. |
| Mating component | Shaft/bore dimensions and units, groove diameter/width, edge and clearance requirements from the approved assembly drawing. |
| Material and finish | Exact material, condition, finish and inspection requirements; no inferred grade from colour or maker example. |
| Application qualification | Approved retention requirements, installation/removal access and qualification evidence needed; no generic rating or process settings. |
| Order controls | Quantity by item, drawing revision, documents, sample-review requirements, packing and destination; unresolved inputs listed. |
Common product questions
Is a constant-section ring always a spiral ring?
No. Uniform section is one geometric attribute. Constant-section open snap rings and flat-wire spiral retaining rings must be identified by their complete construction and selected reference.
Are round-wire and flat-wire rings interchangeable?
Not by family name or nominal size. Compare section, free-state geometry, groove and end configuration against the controlled part and assembly drawings.
Does no plier lug mean tool-free installation?
No. The selected product and approved assembly process determine installation and removal requirements. A generic reference illustration does not verify tool suitability.
