Product and application brief
Internal bore circlips fit a circumferential groove inside a housing or bore. The portion projecting into the bore provides a retaining shoulder for components. This page covers the lugged, axially assembled bore-ring form. It is not an external shaft circlip, an E clip or a spiral ring; a similar apparent diameter does not establish interchangeability.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| DIN472 normal and heavy types | DIN Media lists DIN472:2026-05 for bore retaining rings in normal and heavy types. This verifies the catalogue identity, not the full normative geometry or FastenerBridge conformity. Identify the requested type and edition. |
| Normal catalogue example — Bossard BN822 | Bossard lists BN822 as standard-design bore retaining rings with DIN472 reference. Its catalogue notes certain size variants outside DIN472. A family heading therefore does not establish that every catalogue variant is covered by the standard. |
| Heavy catalogue example — Bossard BN824 | Bossard lists BN824 as a heavy-duty bore-ring design with DIN472 reference. Select its exact ring and groove requirements rather than assuming that a normal ring of similar bore size is an equivalent. |
| Maker series example — Rotor Clip DHO | The DHO-30 original page describes DHO as axially assembled internal metric circlips with tapered section. DHO is a manufacturer series reference, not a FastenerBridge stock code or proof of latest-edition conformity. |
Bore size, groove and ring size are different
Keep nominal bore diameter separate from groove diameter, groove width, ring thickness and free-state ring diameter. The receiving bore and the free ring are measured in different conditions. Drawing symbols and tolerances must follow the selected specification. Include groove location and corner or edge requirements where specified, without inferring universal dimensions from the nominal bore size.
Internal lugs and assembly clearance
A conventional internal circlip has holed end lugs directed into the centre opening. The representative illustration shows this form, not every alternative lug profile or exact standard geometry. Specify the actual profile and available access within the housing. Tool access and clearance around retained components are assembly requirements, not confirmed by a photograph.
Normal and heavy constructions
Normal and heavy types remain separately identified. Ring thickness and mating-groove details require checking even when the nominal bore diameter matches. An external shaft ring, radial E clip or multi-turn spiral ring has a different installation arrangement. Use the family page to select the correct construction before choosing a reference.
Edition, material and qualification boundaries
DIN Media lists the May 2026 edition as replacing DIN472:2017-06. Preserve the required drawing and standard edition rather than mixing legacy catalogue dimensions with a latest-edition conformity claim. Specify material, condition, finish and acceptance documents independently. Catalogue material options or black appearance do not establish our actual production specification, hardness, corrosion performance or inventory. Loading, reuse, temperature and installation limits require product-specific approved technical information.

Common product questions
Is an internal ring the same as a shaft circlip?
No. An internal ring retains within a bore or housing; an external shaft ring retains around a shaft. Similar apparent diameters do not establish the same groove or profile.
Does a DIN472 catalogue heading cover every variant?
Not necessarily. Check the exact variant and edition. A supplier catalogue can include sizes outside the referenced standard; the heading alone is insufficient conformity evidence.
Can I order from the free ring diameter alone?
Provide the intended nominal bore size and selected part reference or drawing, with the groove specification. Free-state ring diameter, installed bore diameter and groove diameter are separate fields.
