Product and application brief
External shaft circlips locate in a circumferential groove on the outside of a shaft. The ring portion outside the groove provides a retaining shoulder for the assembly. This page covers the lugged, axially assembled shaft-ring construction. Internal bore rings, radial E clips and spiral rings are separate forms, not interchangeable names for this product.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| DIN471 normal and heavy types | DIN Media lists DIN471:2026-05 for shaft retaining rings in normal and heavy types. The catalogue identity establishes the standard family, not the dimensional tables or our production conformity. Select the required type and edition. |
| Standard-design catalogue example: Bossard BN818 | Bossard identifies BN818 as standard-design shaft rings with DIN471 reference. Keep the selected catalogue part and drawing; BN818 is a supplier identifier, not a new global standard or a FastenerBridge stock code. |
| Heavy-duty catalogue example: Bossard BN821 | Bossard identifies BN821 as heavy-duty shaft rings with DIN471 reference. A similar nominal shaft size does not establish the same ring thickness, groove width or suitability as a standard-design ring. |
| Manufacturer-series example: Rotor Clip DSH | Rotor Clip describes DSH as an axially assembled external metric retaining ring with tapered section. Its drawings distinguish free-state ring dimensions from shaft and groove dimensions. DSH is a maker series, not cross-brand equivalence or brand affiliation. |
Separate shaft size, groove and free ring
Nominal shaft diameter, groove diameter, groove width, ring thickness and free-state ring diameter are different fields. A free ring measurement cannot replace the installed shaft reference. Use the selected standard or controlled drawing for dimension symbols, tolerances, measurement conditions and edge requirements; no universal groove dimensions are supplied here.
Normal versus heavy, and external versus internal
State the normal or heavy construction explicitly. Do not substitute an internal bore circlip because its apparent diameter resembles an external shaft ring. Lug geometry and tool access should follow the selected drawing. E clips and spiral rings have different sections and assembly arrangements; return to the family page to identify those forms.
Edition, material and surface identification
The official DIN catalogue lists the May 2026 edition and its replacement of the April 2011 edition. A legacy catalogue reference does not automatically confirm the latest-edition geometry. Preserve the required edition and drawing revision. Specify material, condition and finish separately; a black surface is not evidence of a particular steel, hardness or corrosion performance. Maker catalogue options do not prove FastenerBridge stock or manufacturing qualification.
Assembly-design boundary
Ring and mating groove form one design interface. Loading, rotational conditions, installation tooling and inspection acceptance must be established for the actual assembly using approved technical information. No general load, speed, reuse, installation-force or temperature guarantee is inferred from the family name or illustration.
Specification fields
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Identity | External shaft ring, normal/heavy type, exact standard and edition, maker reference if required or drawing number/revision. |
| Shaft and groove | Nominal shaft size; groove diameter, width, position, tolerances and any specified corner/edge geometry, with units. |
| Ring dimensions | Thickness and free-state dimensions using the selected reference's symbols and measurement conditions. |
| Profile and access | End/lug and plier-hole geometry where specified; assembly clearance and tool-access requirements. |
| Material and finish | Material designation, condition, surface treatment and required inspection or traceability documents. |
| Quantity and unresolved items | Quantity in pieces for each size/type; attach ring and mating-groove drawings and flag missing tolerances or reference edition. |
Common product questions
Is the nominal shaft size the free ring diameter?
No. The nominal shaft reference, groove diameter and free-state ring diameter are separate quantities. Use the selected drawing or standard definitions.
Are normal and heavy DIN471 rings interchangeable?
Not automatically. Select the exact type and check its ring and groove specification. Similar shaft sizes do not establish identical thickness, groove width or performance.
Does a DIN471 reference establish your certification?
No. The reference identifies the requested product family. Actual conformity, inspection and production documentation require separate evidence for the selected specification.
