Product and application brief
Plastic push-in rivets are panel fasteners whose retention comes from the selected molded body or pin-and-body arrangement. They are distinct from metal blind rivets, rivet nuts and metal drive rivets. Similar names can cover different retention and removal mechanisms.
Construction choices
| Choice or field | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Pin-and-body snap rivet | Essentra identifies snap constructions whose legs expand as the pin engages the body. Identify both components and their supplied assembly condition. |
| Other push-in constructions | Single-piece push fasteners and removable pin/grommet forms use different geometry. Do not transfer removal or reuse claims between families. |
Hole and panel stack
Identify hole diameter and shape, stack thickness, host materials, access side and rear clearance. Select the exact part against its documented panel and hole requirements; a nominal shank diameter is not a complete fit definition.
Head and retention geometry
Record head outline, protrusion, body length, leg geometry and pin position. A drawing must distinguish the uninstalled condition from the set condition. A smooth head does not prove flush seating or tamper resistance.
Permanent versus removable
State whether removal is required and which documented release mechanism is intended. Some snap forms are permanent; others have specified removal methods. No universal reuse cycle count or tool compatibility is assumed.
Material and service requirements
Specify the precise polymer and environmental requirements for the selected part. Colour or the word nylon does not prove resin grade, flame classification, temperature capability or electrical qualification. Those claims require part-specific documentation.
Not a metal drive rivet
Metal drive rivets and plastic pin-expansion rivets must be quoted separately. Do not transfer a metal setting method, structural rating or installation tool to a molded plastic panel fastener.
Specification fields
| Choice or field | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Identity | Exact maker reference or controlled drawing/revision; one-piece versus pin/body. |
| Panel interface | Hole shape/diameter, total grip thickness, host materials and rear clearance. |
| Geometry | Head, body, pin and leg requirements; installed and uninstalled drawings. |
| Service | Required removal method, polymer, finish/colour and documented environment requirements. |
| Order | Quantity, packing, destination and requested inspection/material documents. |
Common product questions
Are all plastic snap rivets removable?
No. Removal must follow the exact selected construction and its documentation.
Can a metal rivet tool be assumed suitable?
No. Identify the specified setting method for the plastic fastener.
Does nylon identify the full material specification?
No. State the exact resin and any required evidence separately.
