Product and application brief
Spring clip is a broad name for an elastic retaining part, not one universal product model. This entry covers tool-retaining and formed-sheet or wire clip constructions. Hose spring bands remain under hose clamps; shaft circlips and retaining rings remain under pins and rings.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Tool-retaining / Terry-style clips | Opposed spring jaws retain a cylindrical item above a mounting base. Identify the gripping geometry, opening and base-hole pattern. |
| Formed leaf and flat clips | Bent strip parts with geometry defined by the mating component. The term spring clip alone does not identify a standard or operating force. |
| Snap-button spring assemblies | Valco uses A Series for single-end straight-leg, D Series for double-end and F Series for flat-type snap-button constructions. These are maker series, not global standard codes. |
| Loop and wire spring forms | Valco lists LPS loop-spring and W wire references. Sheet and wire constructions need different dimensional records. |
Shape is the primary identifier
Show the mating part and the installed clip position. Describe the free-state opening separately from the engaged geometry. A photograph can identify a family, but does not replace dimensions or tolerances.
Material and forming condition
Spring manufacturers distinguish high-carbon spring steel and stainless options. State the exact material, thickness or wire diameter, treatment and finish required by the part specification; do not infer retention force from material name alone.
Catalog code or drawing-based part
A maker code helps locate one catalog family. For a new formed part, the drawing should describe the bends, holes, contact surfaces and permitted movement. Elastic force, cycle performance and application suitability require separate requirements and verification.
Specification fields
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Mating geometry | Part diameter/profile, installed position and contact surfaces. |
| Clip geometry | Free opening, strip width/thickness or wire diameter; bends and tolerances. |
| Mounting | Base dimensions, hole size/pattern or edge engagement. |
| Material / finish | Exact material designation, forming/treatment condition and surface finish. |
| Functional requirements | Specified movement and retention requirements where needed; no assumed rating. |
| Reference / quantity | Catalog reference or drawing revision, quantity and units. |
Common product questions
Is spring clip a single standard product?
No. The name covers different retaining geometries. Identify the construction, dimensions and selected reference or drawing.
Are A Series and D Series universal codes?
No. These references describe Valco catalog families and are not global standard designations.
Where are hose spring bands and circlips listed?
Hose spring bands are in Hose Clamps. Shaft and bore retaining rings are in Pins & Rings, avoiding duplicate product families here.
