Self-Clinching Standoffs

Compare through-threaded, blind-threaded and unthreaded clinch standoffs; define panel spacing, usable engagement, receiving-sheet and installation interfaces.

Product and application brief

A self-clinching standoff creates an attached spacing point in a metal panel. The barrel separates the panel from a second component, while a prepared mounting interface retains the fastener in the sheet. Choose the bore function independently from the spacing requirement: a threaded bore accepts a mating screw, whereas an unthreaded bore is a clearance passage. This page identifies these choices without treating a loose spacer, welded part or circuit-board press-fit part as the same construction.

Product forms and reference names

Choice or fieldWhat to identify
Through-hole threadedPennEngineering SO/SOS/SOA reference forms provide a screw-thread interface with an open axial passage. Their catalogue describes a head seated flush with one mounting-sheet face under the selected installation conditions; an open passage does not establish full-length usable thread.
Blind threadedBSO/BSOS/BSOA reference forms have a closed end and accessible female thread. The catalogue describes a flush, closed outer sheet-side surface after installation. Blind refers to the fastener bore here, not a blind pocket machined in the receiving panel.
Through-hole unthreadedSO/SOS/SOA unthreaded reference forms provide clearance through the barrel for spacing multi-panel assemblies. An unthreaded bore diameter is not a mating thread size; name the required clearance function explicitly.
Thin-sheet threaded formsTSO/TSOS/TSOA references use a distinct thin-sheet clinching interface. The SO bulletin distinguishes through-threaded, limited tapped-depth and blind styles; select the exact style and receiving-sheet conditions rather than assuming every length has a through thread.
Round-head close-to-edge formDSO/DSOS references use a round knurled head rather than the ordinary head form. Treat the selected edge distance and tooling as code-specific; the family name does not permit arbitrary placement next to a bend or edge.
Grounding-end formSOSG/SOAG examples have gripping teeth at the component-contact end. Define the actual electrical contact interface and acceptance separately; neither a threaded metal barrel nor an AI appearance image proves a qualified grounding path.

Blind bore, through bore and mounting hole are different

Draw the receiving-panel mounting hole separately from the fastener's axial bore and the second component's clearance hole. In the cited blind-threaded family the fastener closes the outer mounting-sheet face, but installation still uses the specified round sheet opening. This is not the concealed-head stud method with a milled blind panel pocket. A through-bore version instead leaves an axial passage. Neither configuration establishes leak-tightness, enclosure ingress protection or electrical insulation without an approved assembly design.

Usable thread depth is not the stand-off length

State the required assembled gap with its measuring faces, then identify the selected drawing's length datum and usable female-thread depth. A blind-end screw must engage as specified without bottoming; a through passage may have a threaded region and an unthreaded region. Check screw length against the complete stack and any hardware or circuit-board clearance beyond the barrel. Do not convert a catalogue length code into a guaranteed panel-to-panel gap without reading that drawing.

Panel, head and installation access

Confirm receiving-sheet alloy, hardness/condition, thickness, finish and process stage, plus the mounting-hole specification and clearance to edges, bends and other fasteners. Catalogue SO4/BSO4 distinctions for stainless receiving sheets are separate from the fastener simply being stainless. The SO installation reference requires the selected support/punch arrangement and controlled seating; 'blind' does not mean a one-sided rivet-setting method. Do not prescribe a universal hole tolerance, press force or tool.

Spacing and retention need separate acceptance

Specify seating, installed projection/gap, thread or clearance-bore inspection and the agreed fastener-to-sheet retention tests. Separately define mating screw, supported component and joint tightening/acceptance requirements. Support and assembly geometry matter: a standoff selected to establish a gap is not automatically an electrical isolator, a certified earth connection or a structural load-rated post. Manufacturer test tables cannot be transferred to an unspecified supplied part or receiving sheet.

Reference families and substitution boundary

The cited manufacturer codes identify construction choices, not a universal DIN/ISO interchange standard, FastenerBridge stock or authorised distribution. Broaching and soldered surface-mount standoffs are different attachment technologies. A loose spacer or externally threaded clinch stud also has a different fastening interface. Keep the drawing revision, bore function, installed envelope, material/finish, receiving-sheet eligibility and installation method together when a substitute is considered.

Bore functionThrough threaded, blind threaded or unthreaded clearance; identify the closed/open panel-side requirement and selected style.
Installed spacingRequired gap and measuring faces, barrel envelope, length-code drawing, panel/second-component stack and allowed projection.
Mating interfaceThread system, diameter/pitch, fit and usable engagement; or clearance bore specification. Mating screw length must respect blind depth and rear clearance.
Receiving sheetGrade/alloy, hardness and condition, thickness, coating/process stage, mounting-hole specification and edge/bend clearances from the selected drawing.
Head and component-contact endClinching head profile; ordinary or toothed contact face; permitted surface marks and assembly/electrical-contact acceptance where required.
InstallationSelected punch/anvil and support, head seating direction, barrel clearance and both-side access; controlled installation reference, not universal settings.
Inspection and documentationSeating/gap, thread/clearance inspection, agreed retention and joint tests, drawing revision, lot traceability and any required qualification documents.
ProcurementQuantity and packing by selected drawing/material/finish; actual manufacture, approvals, stock, substitutions and delivery require order confirmation.

Common product questions

Does through-hole mean the entire bore is threaded?

No. Through-hole describes the passage; threaded and unthreaded versions both exist, and some styles have a limited tapped depth. Specify usable engagement or clearance separately from stand-off length.

Is a blind standoff installed in a blind panel pocket?

Not the cited BSO/BSOS/BSOA construction. It uses the specified round mounting opening and a closed fastener end. A concealed-head stud installed in a milled blind panel pocket is a different interface.

Does blind mean it can be installed from one side?

No one-sided installation is established here. Follow the selected self-clinching punch, support and access requirements; do not substitute a rivet-nut setting process.

Is a metal standoff automatically a grounding or insulating part?

No. The grounding references have a specific component-contact end; actual electrical contact, isolation and qualification must be defined and tested for the assembly. No electrical or load guarantee follows from the material or image.
