Winged Self-Drilling Screws

Timber-to-steel wing drillers: distinguish clearance wings, countersunk and wafer heads, drill point, board thickness and receiving steel requirements.

Product and application brief

A timber-to-steel wing driller combines a cutting drill point with projecting clearance wings and a threaded shank. The wing feature concerns passage through the board; it is a different selection axis from head shape. An ordinary countersunk drill screw is not automatically a wing driller.

Product forms and reference names

Choice or fieldWhat to identify
Timber-to-steel clearance-wing constructionSFS SC5/SC6 describes wings opening clearance in a wood-based board and breaking at the steel support. This is a manufacturer-defined arrangement, not a guarantee for every board or metal.
Flush-seat catalogue exampleSFS SCS3 identifies a winged timber-to-steel fastener with a milling head. Its selected drive and material are code-specific; the generic image is not that supplied model.
Wafer-head catalogue exampleEJOT WDLS 5.5 is a timber/sheathing-to-steel wing driller with a wafer head and no washer. Winged does not mean that every product is countersunk or carries a sealing washer.
Head-form standard versus wing featureISO 15482:1999 identifies cross-recessed countersunk-head drilling screws with tapping screw thread; ISO lists it as confirmed in 2024. That public identity alone is not evidence of a specified wing geometry or a timber-to-steel assembly approval.

Clearance wings and receiving support

In the documented SFS and EJOT arrangements, the wings enlarge the board passage before the thread reaches the receiving steel and then break on contact with that support. Identify the board and support separately. Do not transfer this mechanism to an arbitrary steel thickness, alternative substrate or plain pointed wood screw.

Head seat is a separate choice

A countersunk or milling head is selected with the board surface and seating requirement; a wafer head remains a different geometry. Specify head profile, diameter, seating detail and drive explicitly. Do not substitute a broad head, countersink angle or washer assembly by appearance.

Point, thread and length review

Provide the exact selected code or drawing, point designation, thread profile, total length and measurement convention. List board thickness, intervening layers or gaps and receiving steel thickness independently. Drilling range, clamping range and required thread engagement are separate selected-product checks, not values inferred from the overall screw length.

Material, installation and qualification

Specify body and point construction, finish, environment and the selected installation instructions. Stainless body, hardened point and bimetal construction are not interchangeable descriptions. Manufacturer approvals and tool codes apply only to their documented products and assembly conditions; no FastenerBridge certification, tool compatibility, torque, load rating or stock is verified here.

Common product questions

Is every countersunk self-drilling screw winged?

No. The head seat and clearance wings are independent structural choices. A countersunk reference or a drill point alone does not establish a wing feature.

Can a wing driller replace any roofing screw?

No. Board-to-steel clearance wings do not establish sealing-washer performance or suitability for a roof-sheet assembly. Identify the complete joint and selected fastener.

Does screw length establish drilling capacity?

No. Overall length, board clamping range, drill point and receiving steel thickness are separate inputs. Confirm the selected product documentation and assembly conditions.
