Thread-Forming Screws for Metal

Identify metal thread-forming screws by thread system, forming lead and mating-metal hole specification; separate DIN 7500-1 identity from maker-specific designs.

Product and assembly brief

Metal thread-forming screws create a mating thread by displacing suitable material during assembly into a prepared hole. Select the exact screw and joint rather than ordering from a generic self-tapping label. This detail deepens the forming mechanism already described on our self-tapping page; it does not replace the existing tapping-head references. Supply scope follows the actual specification and quotation.

Product forms and reference names

Choice or fieldWhat to identify
ISO metric thread-forming referenceDIN 7500-1:2021-07 identifies technical requirements for case-hardened and tempered ISO-metric thread-forming screws. Specify the selected form and controlled drawing separately.
Maker-specific trilobular designsESKA distinguishes TAPTITE 2000 and TAPTITE PRO metal-forming families; their rounded three-lobed geometry and exact profiles are product-specific, not interchangeable labels.
Short forming leadSemblex describes a TAPTITE 2000 SP short tapered lead for shallow blind holes. Its lead and usable engagement must be checked against the selected hole; not every forming screw has this end.
Alignment lead variantsSemblex lists TAPTITE 2000 CA cut-off and non-cut-off end variants. Identify the actual lead on the drawing rather than assuming a generic pointed end.
Sheet-metal-specific geometryESKA identifies FASTITE 2000 as a separate sheet-metal design with double-helix geometry. Do not transfer another product's hole or assembly settings to it.

Forming, cutting and drilling are different selections

The forming screw displaces the mating material; a thread-cutting design uses cutting features, and a self-drilling design has a specified drill point. A tapered threaded lead is not a drill bit. Specify a prepared hole and the selected product's installation reference; this page does not promise drilling-free assembly or chip-free conditions for every joint.

Standard identity is not branded-product equivalence

DIN Media currently lists DIN 7500-1:2021-07 and identifies it as replacing the 2009-06 edition. This establishes an identity and edition, not FastenerBridge conformity. Semblex describes TAPTITE 2000 with a Radius Profile thread and trilobular principle; ESKA separately lists TAPTITE PRO. Do not infer that DIN terminology, different proprietary profiles and tapping-thread ST references are dimensionally equivalent. No normative dimensions or tolerances are reproduced here.

Prepared metal hole and engagement

For a quotation, identify the mating alloy and condition, thickness or boss geometry, and whether the hole is punched, drilled, cast or otherwise prepared. Supply its controlled diameter and tolerance, through/blind condition, entry and available depth. Compare forming-lead length with usable threaded engagement and bottom clearance. These are procurement inputs, not a universal hole-size prescription. Semblex cautions that its calculator guidance requires practical checking before critical use.

Head, drive and assembly controls

Choose the head bearing face, drive, seating geometry and available installation access independently of the forming profile. Record the selected screw material, hardening specification, coating and any approved lubricant. Request joint-specific assembly validation and acceptance criteria rather than copying catalogue torque, strength or vibration claims. No generic tightening value, load rating, reuse or corrosion-life guarantee is stated.

Reference names and actual supply

TAPTITE, TAPTITE PRO, FASTITE and related names identify third-party product technologies. They are identification examples, not FastenerBridge brand affiliation, licensed manufacturing or stocked-product claims. If an exact proprietary reference is required, include it in the enquiry; actual availability, documentation and any proposed alternative need separate confirmation.

Thread and endNominal diameter, pitch and thread system, profile reference, lead form/length, usable engagement and length datum.
Mating componentMetal/alloy and condition, wall or boss geometry, selected hole preparation, diameter/tolerance, entry, through/blind depth and clearance.

Common product questions

Does a tapered thread-forming lead drill its own hole?

No drill point is established by a tapered threaded lead. Identify the prepared hole and selected installation requirements; self-drilling screws are a separate selection.

Can all trilobular references use one pilot-hole size?

No universal hole size is assigned here. The selected screw geometry, mating metal and component design need an approved hole specification and validation.

Is a DIN 7500-1 reference proof of TAPTITE equivalence or supply?

No. The standard identity and a proprietary product reference are different information. No dimensional equivalence, brand licence, stock or conformity is claimed.

How should a blind-hole enquiry differ?

Include actual available depth, forming-lead length, usable engagement and bottom clearance. A maker-specific short-lead variant is not a property of every metal-forming screw.
