Grooved Pins

Identify solid grooved pins by groove profile, groove position and engagement length, end geometry, selected standard edition and receiving-hole drawing.

Product and application brief

A grooved pin is a solid locating or retaining part with formed longitudinal grooves and raised material beside them. It is not a hollow slotted spring pin, a coiled pin or a smooth ground dowel. Select the actual groove form and assembly function before specifying the hole and order.

Product forms and reference names

Choice or fieldWhat to identify
Full-length parallel groovesGroov-Pin Type 3H uses parallel grooves along the length, with short pilots/chamfers at both ends. This maker series is a construction example, not an ISO equivalence.
Full-length tapered groovesGroov-Pin Type 1 varies the groove profile along the pin. A tapered groove is not a blanket instruction to use a taper-pin body or reamed taper hole.
Partial-length groovesGroov-Pin Type 2A has grooves over half the length plus a short pilot. Separate the retaining region from the ungrooved region.
Centrally positioned groovesGroov-Pin Type 5 places the grooved region in the middle. Axial location and retained members must be given, not inferred from overall length.
Current ISO identityISO 8740:2025 identifies a parallel pin with chamfer point and full-length diamond grooves with open ends. Obtain the selected normative drawing; do not infer that any maker Type 3H has identical geometry.

Groove geometry and axial position

Record the groove pattern, groove extent and position from the selected end. Give nominal body diameter separately from the expanded groove envelope and define any smooth guiding or bearing region. Groov-Pin explains that formed grooves displace material beside them; that retention mechanism is not an open spring-pin slot.

Standard edition is part of the identity

ISO lists ISO 8740:2025 as the published replacement for withdrawn ISO 8740:1997. Its current title describes full-length diamond grooves with chamfer point. ISO 13669:2025 covers general grooved-pin requirements and assembly principles. These catalogue identities are not dimensional tables, installation instructions or evidence of FastenerBridge compliance. Do not assume equivalence between a legacy drawing, a maker type and the current edition.

Retention and movement are separate assembly choices

State which member retains the grooved region and which member must rotate, slide or remain located. ISO 13669 identifies locking, positioning/guiding and relative rotation as possible functions; this does not qualify any particular joint. Give engagement length, component stack, end projection, access and required inspection. A locating function alone is not a pull-out or shear rating.

Receiving hole and installation inputs

Provide the receiving-hole diameter and tolerance, material, wall section, blind or through condition and entry details from the approved assembly drawing. Specify the required insertion direction and installation method, support and acceptance criteria. No generic interference, hole allowance, pressing force or repeated-removal guarantee is supplied here.

Distinguish neighbouring pin constructions

Smooth dowels depend on their specified body and hole fit; slotted and coiled spring pins are hollow elastic constructions. Knurled and barbed solid pins have different retention profiles. Do not substitute them by matching nominal diameter or by assuming a photograph proves equivalent retention. Use the existing pages for dowel, taper and spring-pin selection.

Material, finish and supplied-part confirmation

Request the actual material designation, hardness or heat treatment where required, coating and finished-condition measurements. Appearance does not establish alloy, corrosion performance or manufacturing method. Controlled inspection and assembly qualification documents govern acceptance. Quantity, feasibility, MOQ and delivery remain subject to quotation confirmation.

Common product questions

Is a grooved pin the same as a slotted spring pin?

No. A grooved pin has a solid body with surface retention features. A slotted spring pin has an open hollow section; the constructions and receiving-hole requirements differ.

Does full-length tapered groove mean a taper-pin body?

Not automatically. Identify the body drawing and groove profile separately. A maker type name does not establish a taper-pin standard or mating hole.

Can the smooth region serve as a pivot?

Only if the selected assembly is designed and qualified for that function. Give the retained region, bearing region, clearance, component material and movement requirement.

Can a 1997 reference be assumed equal to ISO 8740:2025?

No. ISO identifies the older edition as withdrawn. Obtain the specified edition and controlled geometry rather than assuming dimensional equivalence.
