Slotted and Castle Nuts

Hexagon slotted and castle nuts: full-width slots or reduced crowns, thread identification and mating-pin details for standard and drawing-based parts.

Product and application brief

These nuts have slots opening from one end of an internally threaded body. In the common hexagon slotted form, the flats continue to the slotted end; a castle form has a reduced, round turret above the hexagonal wrenching body. Both are associated with a mating cross-hole and specified retaining pin, but the name alone does not establish geometry, fit or an approved joint.

Product form / fieldReference and distinguishing details
Hexagon slotted nutA hexagonal body with slots at its end. Confirm the body height, slot width and depth, and the position of the slots relative to the mating cross-hole.
Castle / castellated nutA hexagonal lower body with a reduced cylindrical slotted crown. Specify crown diameter and height in addition to the thread and wrenching dimensions.
Standard or drawing-based variantDIN 935-1:2013-08 covers hexagon slotted and castle nuts with metric coarse and fine pitch threads, product grades A and B. DIN Media also lists Corrigendum 1:2024-08; identify the applicable corrected specification. Special profiles need their own drawing.

Slots, crown and thread are separate features

A shared nominal thread does not make the two profiles interchangeable. Record overall height, unslotted body height, across-flats size and slot geometry; for a turret form, include the crown dimensions. Where the drawing controls thread extent in the slotted section, identify it explicitly rather than inferring it from an illustration.

Mating cross-hole and retaining pin

Provide the mating bolt, shaft or stud drawing, including the cross-hole diameter and its axial location relative to the joint. Identify the specified retaining-pin type and dimensions separately. This page does not assume a pin is included with each nut or prescribe pin selection, installation or alignment adjustments.

Define assembly requirements separately

These parts are not the same construction as friction-type prevailing-torque lock nuts. A visible slot does not by itself prove locking performance or suitability for a safety-critical application. Torque, preload and alignment acceptance requirements come from the applicable assembly specification; no universal tightening or back-off instruction is supplied here.

Common product questions

What distinguishes a castle nut from a hexagon slotted nut?

A castle form has a reduced cylindrical slotted crown above the hexagonal body. In a common hexagon slotted form, the flats extend to the slotted end. Confirm the drawing because trade names can overlap.

Can they be interchanged when the thread matches?

Not solely on thread size. Check body and crown dimensions, slot geometry, mating cross-hole position and the applicable assembly requirements.

Are the retaining pin and tightening procedure included?

No pin supply or universal tightening procedure is implied. Identify pins as required line items and provide the applicable assembly specification; this page is a component-identification guide.
