Product and application brief
All-metal prevailing-torque nuts use a metal locking feature that creates interference with the mating thread. A deformed threaded region or metal collar provides resistance to rotation without a nylon insert. Cone-top, pinched-top and collar constructions are distinct options; identify the required profile rather than treating every metal lock nut as the same part.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Cone-top or pinched-top construction | A locally deformed top region provides the metal locking feature. Confirm the profile, overall height, wrenching height and specified locking construction; a similar silhouette is not proof of an identical part. |
| Regular-height metric nut | ISO 7719:2025 identifies the all-metal hexagon regular-nut family with metric coarse-pitch threads. It is a product reference, not a declaration that every regular-height lock nut conforms. |
| High metric nut | ISO 7042:2025 identifies the all-metal hexagon high-nut family with metric coarse-pitch threads. Overall height and wrenching height are separate dimensions. |
| Fine-pitch high nut | ISO 10513:2025 identifies the all-metal hexagon high-nut family with metric fine-pitch threads. Specify the actual pitch; nominal diameter alone is insufficient. |
| Other standard or drawing-based form | For inch threads, special collars, flange forms or another locking design, provide the governing part number, specification or controlled drawing. These variants are not automatically equivalent to the metric references above. |
Metal locking features are not nylon inserts
The interference comes from a metal feature rather than a non-metallic insert. Supplier terms such as cone-top describe a construction, not a complete material or performance specification. Record the required locking region and orientation from the selected drawing; appearance alone cannot establish the assembly procedure.
Thread, height and mating fastener
Identify diameter and pitch or TPI, thread system and fit, nut height and across-flats dimensions. Provide the mating bolt or stud specification where compatibility matters. Regular and high nuts, coarse and fine pitches, or superficially similar locking profiles should not be substituted solely because the nominal thread diameter matches.
Functional requirements need their own specification
ISO 2320:2015 addresses functional properties of prevailing-torque steel nuts, including laboratory testing of prevailing torque and torque/clamp-force behaviour. It is not a universal installation-torque chart. Any required tests, service-temperature limits or permitted reuse come from the applicable specification and verified assembly requirements, not from the words all-metal.

Common product questions
How do all-metal and nylon-insert lock nuts differ?
All-metal types use a metal locking feature, such as a deformed top region or collar. Nylon-insert types use a non-metallic insert. The construction name alone does not establish temperature limits, reuse rules or certified performance.
Are ISO 7719, ISO 7042 and ISO 10513 interchangeable references?
No. ISO 7719:2025 identifies regular all-metal metric coarse-pitch nuts; ISO 7042:2025 identifies high coarse-pitch nuts; ISO 10513:2025 identifies high fine-pitch nuts. Confirm the exact geometry, thread and specification rather than substituting by diameter alone.
Does this page provide tightening torque or a reuse guarantee?
No. Installation torque, service conditions and permitted reuse require the applicable assembly specification and validated requirements. Product illustrations and standard reference names do not establish those limits.
