Product and application brief
A beveled or taper washer has two non-parallel bearing faces. Its thickness changes across the plate to provide an interface with an inclined mating surface. Identify the section and washer geometry together: it is not simply a flat square washer with a chamfered edge.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| U-section square taper washer | DIN 434:2024-10 is titled Square taper washers for U-sections. This reference identifies a product family; the required size and detailed geometry still need the selected specification. |
| I-section square taper washer | DIN 435:2024-10 identifies square taper washers for I-sections. Do not substitute a U-section washer merely because its clearance hole fits the bolt. |
| Assembly-specified hardened beveled washer | Some structural-washer specifications include beveled forms. Check the complete assembly requirements and selected specification; shape alone does not establish hardness or structural suitability. |
| Drawing-defined taper washer | A special slope, outline, hole or slot requires a drawing with orientation and tolerances. A similar appearance does not make it a DIN-standard part. |
Slope and orientation are separate selection fields
Record the slope value with its units and reference direction. A percentage gradient and an angle in degrees are different ways of expressing inclination and must not be copied as the same number. Identify the thick edge, thin edge and required orientation against the mating drawing.
Do not confuse a taper washer with a flat square washer
A flat square washer has parallel bearing faces; a taper washer has a thickness gradient. DIN 436 square washers belong to the flat family. A chamfer around an edge or hole does not by itself create the inclined bearing face described here.
Standard references are not interchangeability or supply evidence
The DIN catalogue confirms the identities and 2024-10 editions of DIN 434 and DIN 435. Bossard lists U-section and I-section taper washers as separate catalogue forms. These references do not establish identical dimensions, our stock, company certification or conformity of a supplied batch.
Geometry and material requirements
State the outside outline, hole clearance, slope and thickness measurement locations. Material, hardness and finish must be specified separately. For assembly-defined hardened forms, use the selected assembly documentation rather than transferring requirements from an ordinary taper washer.
Specification fields
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Product identity | U-section form, I-section form, assembly-defined beveled form or a drawing-based special. Include the exact standard/designation and edition when required. |
| Bolt and clearance hole | Bolt nominal size and thread system; required clearance-hole diameter and any specified hole geometry. Washer hole size is not the bolt thread diameter. |
| Outside geometry | Length and width or another defined outline; edge details and any required slot. |
| Slope and orientation | Value, units, reference direction and identification of thick/thin edges against the mating surface. |
| Thickness | Minimum and maximum thickness, their measurement positions and applicable tolerances from the selected specification or drawing. |
| Material, hardness and finish | Specify the required material and any hardness or coating requirements; do not infer them from the illustration. |
| Quantity and documents | Quantity with units, selected designation and any drawing/revision or matching-section information. |
Common product questions
Is a beveled washer the same as a flat square washer?
No. A taper washer has non-parallel bearing faces and a thickness gradient. A flat square washer has parallel bearing faces; an edge chamfer does not make it the same product.
Are DIN 434 and DIN 435 interchangeable?
They identify different U-section and I-section square taper washer families. Select the required reference and verify its geometry against the mating section rather than assuming interchangeability.
Does the illustration establish dimensions or structural approval?
No. It shows generic wedge geometry for identification only. Exact dimensions, tolerances, material and any assembly approval require the selected specification and product documentation.
