Product and application brief
Truss-head drill screws combine a broad, low rounded head, a tapping thread and a drill point. Modified-truss catalogue forms may incorporate a wider washer-like head perimeter. Confirm the profile and bearing diameter from the selected drawing: the trade name is not a complete specification.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Truss or mushroom-head catalogue form | Bossard North America lists a mushroom/truss-head self-drilling product. Its named catalogue form is an identification reference, not a universal dimension or company supply qualification. |
| Modified-truss drill screw | All Points Fasteners separately lists modified-truss self-drilling screws with a designated drill point and thread type. Identify the widened perimeter and actual head profile rather than assuming every truss-style head matches it. |
| Different head names require geometry confirmation | A wafer, lath, mushroom or modified-truss description may be used in a supplier catalogue, but the name alone does not prove interchangeability. Send head diameter/height, underside profile, drive and the exact drawing or maker code. |
| Not pan head or countersunk | A pan-head drill screw has its own head geometry; a countersunk head uses a conical seat. Do not transfer their standard identities or dimensions to a broad truss-style head. |
Head envelope and bearing interface
Record maximum head diameter, head height, underside bearing shape and any integral rim. Check surrounding clearance and the mating opening against the selected drawing. A broad head alone does not establish pull-through resistance or a connection load rating.
Drive and thread identity
Specify drive type and size independently of head shape. Identify the tapping-thread or specified inch designation, diameter and required threaded length. A truss-head machine screw and a pointed tapping screw are not drill-point products just because their heads look similar.
Drill point and material stack
A self-drilling version needs a cutting-point construction. Provide point type or drawing, sheet/support materials and individual thicknesses. Drilling capacity, installation settings and suitability follow exact product documentation; no universal values are supplied here.
Reference and drawing boundaries
No single universally applicable formal standard identity for every truss/modified-truss drill-screw construction is established by the sources checked. ISO 15481 names cross-recessed pan-head drilling screws and should not be presented as truss-head conformity. Use a selected specification or controlled drawing for exact geometry, material and tests.
Specification fields
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Identity | Truss, mushroom or modified-truss description plus exact catalogue code, selected specification or controlled drawing/revision. |
| Head | Diameter, height, underside bearing profile and integral perimeter/rim details; distinguish from a separate loose washer. |
| Drive | Recess type and size, matching the specified head form. |
| Thread and length | Actual tapping-thread or inch designation, diameter, profile, length with measurement convention and required thread length. |
| Point and substrate | Drill-point designation/drawing, required drilling range and individual sheet/support material thicknesses. |
| Material and finish | Specified screw construction, material, finish and inspection documents; no default hardness or coating-life claim. |
| Quantity and attachments | Quantity in pieces, matching-part/head-clearance information and exact product drawing or code. |
Common product questions
Are truss and modified-truss self-drilling screws always the same?
No automatic equivalence is established here. Check the head perimeter, height, underside bearing geometry and selected drawing or catalogue code.
Can a pan-head screw standard be used as proof for this head?
Not simply from appearance. ISO 15481 identifies cross-recessed pan-head drilling screws; a truss-style variant needs its own specified identity and geometry.
Does the wide head prove strength or eliminate the need for a washer?
No. The mating interface and connection requirements must be specified separately. A generic wide-head illustration is not a load, sealing or installation guarantee.
