Product and application brief
This family combines a raised rounded pan head, a tapping screw thread and a drill point. The head seats above the mating surface rather than in a countersink. Head shape alone is not enough to identify the part: check the drive, thread and cutting-point construction separately.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Cross-recessed pan head | ISO 15481:1999 identifies cross-recessed pan-head drilling screws with tapping screw thread. ISO records this edition as confirmed in 2024. Use the exact specified recess and product requirements, not just the head name. |
| Legacy DIN catalogue reference | DIN 7504 N appears in pan-head drill-screw catalogues. Bossard marks that standard reference withdrawn and uses an approximate ISO cross-reference; this is not proof of automatic interchangeability. |
| Hexalobular pan head | Bossard BN 33070 identifies a six-lobe-drive pan-head drill-screw product. Its drive differs from a cross recess; an approximate catalogue ISO reference does not extend the cross-recessed standard to every drive. |
| Square-drive and drawing-specific forms | Bossard also lists square-drive pan-head drill screws in its North American catalogue. Specify the exact inch or metric designation, drive and point style; catalogue codes are not universal manufacturing specifications. |
Drill point versus ordinary tapping point
A drill point has cutting geometry distinct from a simple sharp tapping point. A pan-head machine screw, a pointed self-tapping screw and a drill-point screw are not interchangeable product identities. Include the required drill-point designation or controlled drawing.
Thread size and length convention
State the actual thread designation, nominal diameter and length unit. Do not replace a tapping-thread designation with a metric machine-thread size because the numbers look similar. Specify how length is measured, and separate threaded length from drill-point length where relevant.
Material stack and drilling requirements
Describe the sheet and support materials, their individual thicknesses and the total stack. Required drilling range depends on the selected point and product documentation, not on pan-head shape alone. No universal drilling thickness or installation speed is specified here.
Head, drive and finish remain separate
Identify head diameter and height, the drive type and size, and whether a washer is actually required. Material, surface treatment and inspection requirements need their own specification. Generic appearance does not establish corrosion performance, hardness or connection approval.
Specification fields
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Product reference | Exact standard and edition, maker reference or drawing/revision; identify pan head and required drive. |
| Thread and diameter | Tapping-thread designation or specified inch system, nominal diameter, pitch/profile and any thread-length requirement. |
| Length | Length with units and measurement convention; separate thread and drill-point dimensions when required. |
| Head and drive | Head diameter/height, recess type and matching drive size; do not substitute six-lobe or square drive for a cross recess without the specified requirement. |
| Drill point and substrate | Point type or drawing, required drilling range, individual sheet/support materials and thicknesses. |
| Material and surface | Specified screw material/construction, finish and documented inspection requirements; no default hardness or coating life inferred. |
| Quantity and attachments | Quantity in pieces, exact designation and applicable drawing or material-stack information. |
Common product questions
Is a pan-head self-drilling screw the same as a pan-head self-tapping screw?
Not necessarily. Self-drilling identifies a cutting drill point. An ordinary pointed tapping screw or machine screw can have a similar head without the same point or thread requirements.
Does ISO 15481 identify every pan-head drive?
Its title specifies cross-recessed pan-head drilling screws with tapping screw thread. Six-lobe, square-drive and other catalogue variants need their own specified reference; the head shape alone does not establish conformity.
Can drilling capacity be selected from the picture?
No. Confirm the selected point and product documentation against the sheet and support materials and thicknesses. The illustration is generic and does not provide a drilling-capacity or installation guarantee.
