Product and application brief
Weld nuts provide an internally threaded component intended for attachment to a metal part by welding. Square and hexagon projection-weld forms are distinct from ordinary nuts: the contact features and, where specified, a locating pilot are part of their geometry. They are used where the design calls for a fixed threaded attachment in sheet-metal components. Select the nut and mating part together rather than treating body shape as the complete specification.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Square weld nut | DIN 928:2013-12 identifies square weld nuts. A square projection form can have four underside contact points; confirm the complete geometry against the selected specification. |
| Hexagon weld nut | DIN 929:2013-12 identifies hexagon weld nuts. Body, projection arrangement and locating features follow the selected standard or drawing, not the shape of an ordinary hex nut. |
| Drawing-based weld nut | Specify any special body, pilot, projection layout or thread on a controlled drawing. A custom form is not automatically compliant with a named standard. |
Projection features and locating geometry
Raised contact features distinguish a projection weld nut from a plain bearing-face nut. Record their layout and any specified pilot dimensions. Identify the intended welding face and mating hole on the drawing so the part can be reviewed for orientation and fit. The illustration is a family reference, not a dimensional or weld-quality acceptance drawing.
Thread and mating-sheet information
Provide the thread system, nominal diameter and pitch or threads per inch, plus any specified tolerance or fit. Include mating-sheet material, thickness, hole dimensions and relevant access or locating constraints. These are purchase inputs, not a universal recipe for a welded joint. Square and hexagon variants should not be substituted solely because the thread matches.
Material, finish and weld-related requirements
Specify the nut material and its required finish separately from the mating-sheet material. Welding introduces heat; finished joint properties cannot be inferred from the nut designation alone. Supply any drawing-defined thread inspection, joint test or weld acceptance criteria. Welding settings and process qualification remain application-specific and are not prescribed on this page.

Common product questions
How does a weld nut differ from an ordinary nut?
A weld nut has geometry intended for welding to a mating component. Projection-type contact points and any locating pilot should be specified; an ordinary nut is not a substitute merely because its thread matches.
Are DIN 928 and DIN 929 the same product?
No. DIN 928 identifies square weld nuts and DIN 929 identifies hexagon weld nuts. Check the full geometry and selected edition before considering a substitution.
Does the nut reference define welding settings or joint strength?
No universal settings or joint strength are established here. Provide the mating-part details and application-specific weld acceptance requirements; this page identifies the component, not a qualified welding procedure.
