Fastener Material Requirements

How to define steel, stainless and other material requirements in a fastener quotation.

Use a complete material designation

Carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel describe broad material families. Provide the actual required designation and mechanical properties instead of relying on appearance or the word stainless.

Review service conditions

Corrosion exposure, temperature, mating materials and loads influence suitability. Selection belongs to the project specification and responsible engineer.

Avoid grade confusion

A material designation, fastener property class and structural bolt grade are different references. Specify the system that applies to the selected part.

RFQ checklist

  • Exact product standard and revision, or controlled drawing.
  • Diameter, length, head/body form and thread.
  • Material, grade, finish and inspection documents.
  • Quantity, packing and delivery destination.
