Wire Rope Thimbles

Identify formed-channel, heavy-pattern and solid wire rope thimbles by rope size, groove geometry and eye clearance; specify the selected construction and drawing.

Product and application brief

A wire rope thimble is an insert inside a rope eye. Its peripheral groove provides a seat for the rope around the eye; the central opening accommodates the connecting hardware. It is not a wire rope clip, sleeve or complete end termination. Select the thimble together with the intended rope and connection rather than treating its nominal rope size as a complete assembly specification.

Product forms and reference names

Product form / fieldReference and distinguishing details
Formed-channel thimblesA shaped sheet-metal channel follows the rope eye. Identify the rope seat, inner opening and tip arrangement from the selected drawing; a similar outer outline does not establish interchangeability.
Heavy-pattern catalogue modelsCrosby G-414 is an extra-heavy thimble series in the manufacturer's catalogue. This is a maker model designation, not a universal load class or a FastenerBridge approval.
Solid and reeving constructionsThese are distinct constructions, not automatic substitutes for formed sheet-steel thimbles. DIN Media's scope summary explicitly excludes solid and reeving thimbles from DIN EN 13411-1:2009-02.

Standard identity and scope

DIN Media identifies DIN EN 13411-1:2009-02 with EN 13411-1:2002+A1:2008, covering thimbles for steel wire rope slings. Its public scope summary concerns non-welded sheet-steel thimbles for general-purpose use. A reference number alone does not show that a particular product meets the standard. Full normative dimensions, tolerances and conformity documentation are not reproduced or verified here.

Rope seat and connector opening are different measurements

Keep nominal rope diameter separate from groove dimensions, overall length, inside length, inside width and back thickness. State the drawing's measurement points and units. Provide the mating pin or shackle geometry as a separate interface: rope fit alone does not establish connector clearance or assembly suitability.

Reference names are not performance guarantees

The Crosby catalogue distinguishes G-414 and stainless SS-414 model names. Material and finish must still be specified for the actual requested part; a model reference does not confer brand affiliation, availability or certification. This page does not assign a working load limit, termination efficiency, installation method or inspection interval. Those depend on the documented complete assembly and its intended service.

Common product questions

Is a thimble the same as a wire rope clip?

No. The thimble seats inside the eye. A clip is a separate rope-fastening component. The complete termination arrangement must be identified separately.

Can rope diameter alone identify the part?

No. Construction, groove profile, inner opening, thickness and connector fit can differ between products labelled for the same rope diameter.

Does an EN or maker model reference prove a lifting rating?

No. A reference identifies a scope or model family. It does not establish this product's compliance, a complete assembly rating or confirmed supply documentation.
