Product and application brief
An eye bolt combines a ring-shaped eye with an externally threaded shank. The eye provides the connection opening, while the shank connects to a threaded hole or a through-hole and nut arrangement, depending on the product. Fixed-eye geometry differs from a swivelling lifting point. Specify the intended mounting arrangement and exact product reference: an eye-shaped fastener is not, by appearance alone, a rated lifting component.
Product forms and reference names
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| DIN 580 lifting-eye reference | DIN Media identifies DIN 580:2024-05 as Lifting eye bolts, replacing the 2018-04 edition. Record the required edition, material and part specification; this reference is not a compliance claim for the illustrated or requested part. |
| Shoulder eye-bolt patterns | A shoulder provides a distinct seating geometry below the eye. Jergens lists inch Standard, metric Short and metric Standard variants; their thread and geometry specifications must be kept separate. |
| Shoulder nut eye bolts | Crosby G-277 identifies a shoulder nut eye-bolt family with a shank and mating nut arrangement. Its maker code is not another name for every DIN 580-style part. |
| Regular nut eye bolts | Crosby G-291 is a separately identified regular nut eye-bolt family. Do not substitute regular and shoulder patterns on the basis of thread diameter or a similar ring outline. |
Eye bolts, eye nuts and swivelling points
An eye bolt has an external male thread; an eye nut has an internal female thread. A fixed eye remains one orientation relative to its body, unlike a designed swivelling or pivoting point. These distinctions describe construction, not a permission to rotate, side-load or lift with a particular part. Confirm the selected product and mounting design before treating another construction as interchangeable.
Metric and inch references need complete thread information
Jergens' shoulder-eye catalogue separates inch and metric variants, including metric Short and Standard forms. State nominal diameter with pitch or threads per inch, thread form and required tolerance class from the selected specification. Overall length, threaded length, shoulder dimensions and eye opening are separate fields; a shared thread designation does not make the full geometry identical.
Keep lifting suitability separate from product identification
DIN 580 and manufacturer lifting catalogues include product-specific requirements beyond the visible shape. This page identifies construction and procurement fields only. It does not reproduce normative dimension tables, assign working load limits, prescribe tightening torque or establish allowed pull directions. Lifting suitability and any required markings or test documents must be confirmed for the actual product and complete mounting arrangement; third-party catalogue ratings are not transferred to FastenerBridge.
Specification fields
| Product form / field | Reference and distinguishing details |
|---|---|
| Reference and intended use | Exact standard with edition, maker model or controlled drawing/revision; specify the application and whether lifting documentation is required. |
| Mounting construction | Tapped-hole or through-hole/nut arrangement; fixed eye, shoulder and any required matching nut specification. |
| Thread designation | Metric or inch form, diameter, pitch or threads per inch, required class and useful threaded length. |
| Shank and shoulder geometry | Overall/shank length, threaded length, shoulder diameter and seating requirements, referenced to the drawing's datums. |
| Eye and connector interface | Inside opening dimensions, eye-section dimensions, connector geometry and any required orientation; do not infer clearance from nominal thread size. |
| Material, finish and quantity | Requested material designation, finish, quantity in pieces and required product documents. List unresolved interface or certification requirements separately. |
Common product questions
Are an eye bolt and an eye nut interchangeable?
No. An eye bolt has an external thread; an eye nut has an internal thread. The mating connection and mounting arrangement differ.
Does a shoulder make every eye bolt suitable for angular lifting?
No. A visible shoulder does not establish allowed directions or a rating. Consult the actual selected product documentation and mounting requirements.
Does a DIN 580 reference prove the supplied part is compliant?
No. Specify the required edition and obtain the actual product documentation. A catalogue reference, illustration or similar shape is not evidence of conformity.
