Coupling Nuts

Long internally threaded connector nuts for joining threaded rods. Compare equal-thread, reducing and drawing-defined forms, with metric or inch thread details.

Product and application brief

A coupling nut is an elongated internally threaded connector. Its length provides a threaded connection between rod ends, while an external hexagon allows a tool to hold or turn the connector. A short hex nut and a coupling nut are different product forms; the required connection geometry should identify which one is needed.

Product forms and reference names

Product form / fieldReference and distinguishing details
Equal-thread hex coupling nutTwo ends with the same specified thread. Identify diameter, pitch or threads per inch, thread hand and overall length.
Reducing connector nutDifferent thread sizes at the two ends. Specify each end separately and show the internal transition on a drawing.
Opposite-hand or special connectorRight/left-hand combinations and other drawing-defined connectors need an explicit end-by-end thread description. These are not interchangeable with a same-thread coupling nut.
Inch-series referenceASME B18.2.2-2022 includes a hex coupling nut table in its official contents. The purchased specification and edition must establish the actual dimensional requirements.
DIN 6334 catalogue referenceThis number appears in commercial coupling-nut descriptions. Its formal standard identity has not been verified here; a catalogue label alone is not a conformity or dimensional basis.

Length and internal geometry

Overall length, width across flats, end chamfers and the internal threaded opening distinguish connector designs. Do not assume that every coupling nut has a length of three times its nominal diameter. A drawing or selected specification should settle the geometry, especially for reducing connectors.

Thread system and mating parts

Metric and inch descriptions use different thread designations. Record pitch or threads per inch and thread hand, rather than nominal diameter alone. The thread information for the mating rod ends is useful when the connector is part of a mixed list. A reference to one family does not establish equivalence to another standard.

Materials and finishes

State the material designation and requested finish separately from the product shape. Where a property class, inspection document or other requirement matters, identify it in the purchase specification rather than inferring it from the illustration or a catalogue name.

Common product questions

How is a coupling nut different from a hex nut?

A coupling nut has an elongated body intended to connect threaded rod ends. An ordinary hex nut is shorter and is a separate product form. Required geometry determines the selection.

Does DIN 6334 establish the dimensions shown here?

No. Its formal standard identity remains unverified here, and no dimensional table is reproduced. Confirm the applicable specification or use an approved drawing.

What information identifies a reducing coupling nut?

Describe the thread at each end separately, together with overall length, external dimensions and internal transition geometry. A single thread designation is insufficient.
