Headed Anchor Bolts

Straight foundation anchor bolts with an integral forged head: distinguish hex, heavy hex and square forms, steel specification, end threads and drawing-defined dimensions.

Product and application brief

A headed foundation anchor has an integral forged head at the unthreaded end and a threaded opposite end. In a cast-in arrangement the head lies within the concrete and the projecting thread receives the specified fastening components. This is a separate structure from a hooked anchor, a headless rod or a rod fitted with a welded nut. The illustration represents a hex-headed form, not every head style.

Product forms and reference names

Product form / fieldReference and distinguishing details
Hex-headed formIntegral six-sided head and straight shank; specify the selected head geometry rather than only the thread diameter.
Heavy hex-headed formA separately specified head form, not an automatic substitute for a regular hex head.
Square-headed formAn integral four-sided head; its drawing and dimensional reference must be identified separately.
ASTM F1554 / ASME B18.2.1ASTM lists F1554-20, Standard Specification for Anchor Bolts, Steel, 36, 55, and 105-ksi Yield Strength. ASME lists B18.2.1-2012 (R2021) for inch-series bolt/screw dimensional data. They address different specification roles, not equivalent standards.

Head form, steel specification and project drawing

Keep three identifiers separate in the product schedule: the required anchor-bolt material specification and grade, the selected head/thread dimensional reference, and the approved foundation assembly drawing. A material designation alone is not a complete head drawing; a dimensional reference is not evidence of steel grade or company conformity. State the required edition rather than assuming a translated product name settles all requirements.

Integral head versus separate end components

A welded-on nut is not the same construction as an integral forged head. Any proposed change belongs in a revised, approved project specification, not an appearance-based substitution. Related headless and plate/nut arrangements remain covered under the separate Straight Anchor Rods entry.

Length, thread and installation dimensions

Provide a dimensioned drawing identifying the length datum, head height, smooth shank and threaded length. Distinguish an under-head length from an overall length if both appear in the parts list. Installed projection and embedment are separate project-design dimensions, not universal values derived from bolt length. This page does not select embedment, concrete edge distance, anchorage capacity or installation torque.

Finish and associated components

Specify the required material designation, surface condition/coating and the corresponding thread-fit requirements. List nuts, washers or templates separately if they belong to the order, with their own specifications and quantities. Preserve any inspection and documentation requirements from the procurement schedule; a general appearance illustration does not establish a particular production route or certification.

Specification fields

Identity and unitsIntegral headed anchor; exact head form; inch or metric system; specification/grade/edition and approved drawing revision.
Head and shankHead outline, across-flat and height dimensions, shank diameter and transition details as defined in the selected toleranced drawing.
Length datumUnder-head or overall length, clearly labelled. Record project projection/embedment only as drawing-specified fields, not inferred recommendations.
Threaded endDesignation, pitch or threads per inch, class/fit, threaded length and any drawing-defined runout or end treatment.
Material, finish and documentsExact steel grade/specification, specified coating and compatible thread fit, inspection documents and identification requirements.
Order scopeQuantity in pieces; drawing attachment/revision; separate nut/washer/template list and units. Flag missing dimensions or document requirements for confirmation.

Common product questions

Is a welded nut equivalent to an integral headed anchor?

No. They are different structures. Keep the required forged-head construction unless the project specification expressly approves another arrangement.

Does an F1554 designation fully specify the head geometry?

No. Record the grade and edition together with the required head form, dimensions, threads and approved project drawing. A reference on this page is not a FastenerBridge compliance claim.

Are hex, heavy hex and square heads interchangeable?

Do not infer interchangeability from a shared thread designation. Preserve the selected head form and drawing; any substitution requires review of the full project requirements.
