Fastener Basics

A practical introduction to product families, geometry and the information needed to specify an industrial fastener.

Start with the product family

Bolts, screws, nuts and washers are used in threaded assemblies. Rivets, pins and retaining rings have different connection and retention functions. Anchor rods and post-installed concrete anchors are separate families.

Define geometry before performance

Diameter and length alone are not a complete part reference. Identify thread system and pitch, head or body form, relevant tolerances and the required standard or drawing.

Complete the purchase brief

Include quantity, material designation, grade, finish, accessories, delivery country and inspection documents. A clear RFQ reduces assumptions at quotation stage.

RFQ checklist

  • Exact product standard and revision, or controlled drawing.
  • Diameter, length, head/body form and thread.
  • Material, grade, finish and inspection documents.
  • Quantity, packing and delivery destination.
